Announcing Capital Area .Net SharePoint Special Interest Group Inagural Meeting

SPSIG_LOGO.gif

Overwhelming interest in all things SharePoint has led the leaders of Northern Virginia's .NET User Group to launch a spin-off of the group to meet users' requests. The SharePoint Special Interest Group (SSIG) is focused on delivering the content the users want. While the SharePoint platform is extensive, we plan to deliver speakers able to address a wide variety of topics, including development, information architecture, user experience, governance and infrastructure. All these components come together to create the best SharePoint experience.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the SharePoint Special Interest Group. This group will be meeting on the second Wednesday of every month at the AT&T location. The same place where Caparea.net meets. This is very exciting not only because SharePoint is cool and is big enough to have it's own group, but two of our own members have stepped up to build this new Caparea.net community. David Berry and Gregory Stringfellow have taken the helm as co-captains and founders of this new group. As a member of the Caparea.net family, the SharePoint Special Interest Group will be supported by Caparea.net.

What a better way to kick off the group than with our area's own SharePoint MVP, Sahil Malik! So, come on out and see what the buzz is about!

See you there!

Vishwas Lele Introduction to Workflow Services - .Net 3.5 - Viswas Lele, RD, MVP
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 7:00 PM

This session will explore how WCF and WF can work together to support the concept of Workflow Services. After a very brief introduction to WF and WCF, we will take a detailed look at key scenarios enabled by Workflow Services including: better data exchange in and out of workflow, enforcing an application protocol on service methods and inheriting WF capabilities such as persistence into a WCF service.

Vishwas Lele is AIS Chief Technology Officer and a noted industry speaker and author. Vishwas is the Microsoft Regional Director for the Washington, D.C. area and a Microsoft MVP. Prior to joining AIS, Vishwas worked for Tata Unisys and Microstrategy. Vishwas received his Bachelors degree in Electronics Engineering from Nagpur University in India and his Masters degree in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

Sahil Malik WCF in SharePoint 2007
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 7:00 PM
WCF is kind of old news. It was introduced as Indigo, back when Michael Jackson was still cool (well almost!). Yet, it is amazing that nobody in the SharePoint 2007 world uses it. Why should that be? Well I guess one of the reasons is the lack of out of box support for WCF in SharePoint. But is it so hard to make SharePoint work with WCF? And is there any good reason for SharePoint to work with WCF? The answers are – no, and ABSOLUTELY! In this session, Sahil uses a pure Windows 2008, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 environment to conjure up some .NET 3.5 + SharePoint 2007 magic. You really shouldn’t miss this talk! Sahil Malik is a nice guy and maintains a website at www.winsmarts.com. His talks are very compelling and terribly informal. He is also an INETA speaker, Microsoft MVP, trainer, consultant, and has spoken at conferences internationally. Currently he is co-authoring his fourth book on SQL Server 2008 for MSPress.

G. Andrew Duthie Controlling AJAX When You Are Out of Control, G. Andrew Duthie, Microsoft
Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 7:00 PM
While implementing and troubleshooting AJAX functionality in an application is rarely easy, it gets even harder when you don't have complete control over the site where you have to implement it. Shared hosting environments, blog accounts on large blog sites, etc. are situations where you may have only limited control over where and when your javascript gets loaded and executed. This talk will walk you through some examples of how you can overcome limitations on such sites, and how to troubleshoot some of the inevitable issues you may run into. Some basic understanding of javascript and AJAX is assumed. Examples will span from simple mouseover image manipulation to implementing controls such as Microsoft's Virtual Earth and Vertigo's Slide.Show Silverlight photo gallery.

G. Andrew Duthie is the .net Developer Evangelist for Microsoft’s Mid-Atlantic States district, where he provides support and education for developers working with the .net development platform. In addition to his work with Microsoft, Andrew is the author of several books on ASP.NET and web development, and has spoken at numerous industry conferences from VSLive! and ASP.NET Connections, to Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference (PDC) and Tech-Ed. Andrew can be reached through his blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/gduthie/.
